Overnight camps

All accommodation provided for participants at the overnight camps will be in huge eight-person tents, each with spacious sleeping compartments (shared quadrants) and a large, central communal area - see graphic below.

Can I choose my tent mates?

We will be in touch before the event to invite participants to choose their tent mates. You will have the option to choose a male, female or mixed tent. Please talk to the info point team during the event if there is any problem with your tent allocation!

When is accommodation provided?

Accommodation is from Day 1 (i.e. upon arrival at the first overnight camp) through to Day 8 (i.e. the last overnight camp in Keoldale, after the finish).

Don’t forget that you must book your own accommodation in Fort William before the Day 1 start!

IMPORTANT

Participants will need to provide their own sleeping bag and mat and these items are included on the mandatory camp clothing & equipment list - please be mindful of space (see graphic below). We would recommend bringing a small pillow too (if it fits in the overnight dry bag)!

What can I expect from the overnight camps?

The overnight camps create a special atmosphere where you will receive support and encouragement from the event team, and enjoy the company of your fellow participants in the communal marquee. Switch off, relax and enjoy the view!

The overnight camp locations will be very basic (think a farmer's field in a rural location) and portable toilets are provided. Basic dishwashing facilities are provided, but please do not expect showers. Some overnight camps allow for participants to make use of the nearest river for washing in, which at least is refreshing!

WHAT CAN THE INFO POINT TEAM HELP WITH?

The info point team (located in the communal marquee at each of the overnight camps) is there to help our participants with all sorts of tasks/questions/queries!

At the info point you can:

Collect your Ultra Mail, sign up for the Explorer course, buy mandatory kit, check the lost and found, get help with kit repairs, donate food if you are leaving the race, charge your devices, change your blue tent allocation (where possible), get language translations, ask any questions, give feedback, and make emergency phone calls.

By the info point there are also TV screens displaying the weather forecast, the results and the GPS Tracking.

If you wish to leave the event, this is also where you need to go. The team can give advice on the best public transport to get you home and book taxis if needed. If you have baggage transfer, you can also collect that from here too.

MPV collection for participants on the Explorer course is also located at the info point (this normally happens between 8-9am).

What is Ultra Mail?

Friends and family can follow participants in real time via the live GPS Tracking page. They can also send messages of support via Ultra Mail! These are messages sent via the GPS Tracking page to individual participants. This is always a hugely popular service that can provide fantastic motivation for participants. Details on how to send Ultra Mail will be shared with active participants just before the event.

What should I expect in adverse weather?

As with all camping experiences, if the weather is fine (fingers crossed!) it will be very enjoyable. However, if the event receives consecutive days of heavy rain (unlikely but not impossible!) everything is likely to become damp, especially considering that all the tents are taken down and moved each day. An extra set of waterproofs for in camp may be a good idea if the forecast is looking poor.

Can friends or family visit me in camp?

Please note that the overnight camps are not accessible to members of the public or family and friends of the participants.
